If I had the dough, I'd spend most of my time in the drape-y, muted, earth friendly offerings from Stella McCartney. But why daydream about unaffordable eco fashion when there are so many green options within reach?

The color may be called "rose" instead of "berry", and you might have to scrounge up your own sash belt, but I'd say that neckline and the overall loose-yet-structured effect capture the look of Stella perfectly. Go green with Angelina's red carpet gown

I'll admit -- that vintage Hermes that Angelina Jolie wore to cover up her baby bump at the SAG awards was not my favorite look for her. The ombre was pretty, but too much volume in all the wrong places (I suppose that was the point.) So it was fun to stumble across an echo of that dress in Larsen Gray's artsy column gown in bamboo and organic cotton.

I much prefer the Larsen Gray's sleek silhouette, with just a single pleat to convey the message of volume. Make sure you check out the detail shots. What looks like ombre from far off is actually a gorgeous scribble pattern that seems randomly drawn across the silk. Almost like those doodles in your page margin during a boring high school english class, only utterly prettier. If you've got somewhere to be dazzling over the holidays, I think you've found your gown.

How adorable is this? Some entrepreneurial gals from Philadelphia got the rights to all the iconography from The All American Girls Professional Baseball League (you know, from that famous movie about their first women's baseball team?) Happily, they chose to show off these vintage prints on organic tees with chemical free printing for their Vintage Blue line. I got to check out these buttery soft vegetable-tanned belts while in NYC over the weekend. They're from Brave Leather, a Canadian company committed to handcrafting products while minimizing the environmental impact of their leather by using vegetable tanning. This is my favorite of their belts, and I was super disappointed that they didn't have my size. There's a bit of wiggle room in the sizing, so you can buy it so the smallest size fits around your natural waist to add some spunk to your float-y dresses, while the larger size drops down around the waist of your skinny pants.

November, eco-fashion lovers! Can you even believe I haven't gotten a chance to post since July? Whew!

The world has certainly not remained static, even though this blog has. Our political future's looking up, while our economy... not so much. The first time I caught a whiff of the financial crisis to come, I worried that the green fashion movement might start fading from popular view. After all, we can't pretend that responsible clothing doesn't have a reputation for being a luxury item. But you know what? How cool is this? Chartreuse Chic was featured in the summer issue of The Nest (a home and lifestyle magazine from the people who brought you The Knot) as one of the Nesties' favorite blogs.

Head over to check out more the The Nest's eco-friendly blog picks and keep an eye on the site for their fun green ideas for living. Their target audience may be newlyweds, but if you can get past the mentions of "your registry," there are some nice ideas for greening your living. I especially liked the simple ideas in "Green Party Tips" for being eco-conscious while throwing a fabulous shindig. They also have advice on going green in "11 Ways to Be an Earth-friendly Couple", which I especially liked because they were so specific about the benefit of making the changes suggested. I've definitely found that it's easier to make green changes if you know exactly why they're helping the planet! Meanwhile, parent site The Knot has introduced a whole new-to-me section on having a green wedding. Check it out if you're in the planning phase.

Chartreuse Punk: A guy's perspective

So C finally corralled me into posting, and it's fortuitous timing. I just got back from Bonnaroo, everyone's favorite neo hippie organic loving music festival in the hills outside of Nashville, TN, so I have been immersed in sustainable, vintage, and eco minded hipsters (and a smattering of eco-disinterest, but we won't hold that against them).

Firstly, if you haven't ever been to Bonnaroo, it's definitely an experience you can't pass up while it lasts. Standouts, in my opinion, were Pearl Jam (the elder statesmen of grunge who are actually better with age), Gogol Bordello (who's music is like a gypsy punk filibuster you can't stop bouncing to), Robert Plant & Alison Krauss (with blues country soul and the occasional Zep cover), and Yonder Mountain String Band (bringing out the dancing hillbilly bluegrass in everyone). More importantly, Bonnaroo does a fantastic job of monitoring their own environmental impact. They had a bevy of compostable utensils and plates/cups, recycling everywhere, organic clothing on site, and an amazing volunteer staff that cleaned and recycled after every show. Last year alone, they recycled 60% of their waste, and bought carbon credits to offset their energy consumption.

In the midst of all this eco friendly rock and rootsy music, it's easy to forget that I have to look goooooood while rocking out. Fortunately, there are a bevy of music festivals this summer to show off your sustainable duds. Start with the most important piece, the hiply irreverent organic tee shirt with artwork by Karl Addison - llamas never looked so badass. Follow it up with stylish (if expensive) chinos by Loomstate made from 100% organic cotton. Even though it comes in blue, the checked pattern is far more nerdy ironic. Remember that fabulous recycled bikini by Aaron Chang from way back in March? Well, turns out the fabric was such a hit that he released a whole line of recycled bikinis! You can try the psychedelic print for the pool, but I'm daydreaming about spending my next vacation surfing in this wave-screened bikini.

I'm especially psyched that it reverses to black, since I've collected a black-centered mix and match swimming collection over the years. It's a trick I learned from the girls in Hawaii, who never bother wearing matching tops and bottoms. Talk about commitment! I've been enjoying the eco finds at Grechen's Closet for a few months now, as Grechen gets more and more interested in eco fashion. Now, she's decided to dedicate an entire month to green fashion and finds, including a month's worth of earth friendly outfits of the day! Grechen does a great job of pulling together an outfit, so I think you'll really enjoy her real world green. My favorite is above -- I love how she blends that riotous Bahar Shahpar print with summer-friendly browns.

Take your vacation "green" at Cotton Tree Lodge

Wow. Wow, wow, wow. I really can't rave enough about our jungle vacation at eco-focused Cotton Tree Lodge in Belize.

Cotton Tree is located in the rarely visited Toledo district at the Southern-most part of Belize. It's a quiet area, especially in the summer rainy season, and ideal to "get away from it all," to borrow the cliche. The lodge itself is a half hour outside of town but feels deep in the jungle. You never mind the remote setting, because Cotton Tree provides all the requirements of a fantastic vacation -- a beautiful and peaceful location on the lazy Moho River, rustic but comfortable* cabins with lovely verandas and hammocks for relaxing, plus entertaining daily excursions to ruins, caves, islands, and even a local village**. As someone who normally plays tour guides on our vacations, it was such a treat to relax and know that every detail of our day was taken care of.

But you guys don't want to hear about our lazy hammock reading. You want to hear about green! And was Cotton Tree green! Most power came from solar panels, and most food from the organic gardens on the premises. Even better was their "sewage" system. We got to use normal flush toilets, but the water was then re-routed to a leach field of banana plants before being returned to the ground. I'm no expert in green toilets, but I can tell you this -- our bathroom was clean and easy, and despite the more natural waste system, the lodge's grounds smelled like jungle and never anything else. So Cotton Tree must have been doing something right!

What was most amazing about the green additions of Cotton Tree was how seamless they were. Our stay felt incredibly luxurious*** despite its lower impact; we certainly never felt that we were sacrificing anything to support a green endeavor. The other nice thing about the green lean? Our fellow guests tended to be open minded and eco aware as well!

All in all, we had an amazing week at Cotton Tree. If you do get a chance to visit Belize, definitely don't let it pass -- the country is beautiful and peaceful, with an active democracy I was delighted to support with my tourist dollars. And if you go, definitely consider staying at Cotton Tree and seeing what a fabulous vacation you can have while going green!

* Comfortable though slightly buggy -- we had a host of moths circling our reading lights every night. But they made for interesting viewing and, let's be honest, what else can you expect in the middle of a jungle!

** If you are ever in Toledo District, the Blue Creek Cave is not to be missed. We scrambled up a few rocks to the entrance, then donned headlamps and tied life jackets around our waists. Then we swam deep into the dark cave, pushing our way against the current and running our hands along the mineral coated walls. When we hit as far as we could safely go, we all turned off our lamps and sat in the dark (redefining dark for me -- thick, inky, deep dark, utterly light free.) It might not sound like much, but it was just an incredible trip, peaceful, awe-inspiring, and like nothing I've done before.

*** M wants me to add the disclaimer that luxurious for us might not be luxurious for someone used to the Four Seasons or Sandals Resorts. But you can get a sense yourself from the website -- the photos there are exactly what we found on arrival.

Quickly: green box store, green investments

1. Get yourself to your local target (or head to their website) and get this organic Rogan tee right now. It won't be as iconic as the tiger tee will become (trust me, like-minded eco-fashionistas will recognize each other on the streets in 2 years because of that tee) but trust me, once you get it on, you won't want to take it off. The cotton is ridiculously soft (seriously, I could barely stop touching it in the store), the color has a comfortable, warn in feel like it's been in your closet for years, and if you're cooped up studying for the one test that will determine your future career options, you won't want to wear anything else (or maybe that's just me.)

2. After a year of obsessively working on his model, M is finally starting up his green investing fund, and has started a blog about the experience. The firm is called Smug Investments and you can also track his progress on his blog, Smugly Green. Of course I'm biased, but I think green investing is really cool. Not only is it a good idea financially (unlike some fashion and lifestyle purchases, you don't have to pay a premium to invest greenly), but it's just another way to support responsible industries! Anyway, I know M would love the support and feedback of the green community (his financial buddies have given him the thumbs up so far), so spread the word and let him know what you think!

Girls always want to look good. That's a no brainer. But admit it -- there are also those occasions, those less-than-special-occasions, where we don't just want to look good -- we need to look better than we ever have before. I'm talking awkward high school reunions, lunch with the "friend" who snagged your promotion, or, worst of all, the wedding of an ex... those times when you need to be absolutely certain that you can walk into a room and be "that girl" who looks effortlessly amazing.

First off, let me say I hope you can avoid as many of these events as possible. But if not? Wear this dress.

Your waist will look miniscule, your curves will look Dita-esque, and with a pretty pair of flats and your hands casually hanging out of the pockets, you'll look like it never occurred to you that seeing you ex-crush, ex-friend, ex-whatever might be awkward. Ah, Earth Day. The one day a year when I can sit back, relax, and not feel bad about posting because pretty much every blog and news organization out there is bringing green news to the world. There a full front page dedicated to eco fashion and beauty, a roundup of eco-friendly beauty products, a list of eco do's, a list of eco don't's, some eco friendly shopping stops and a really thought meditation on what it really means to be green.

But folks who've found Chartreuse Chic don't need to be poked and prodded into being green -- you've already got it on the brain! So, in line with my favorite offering of the day (some eco confessions from fashion insiders), I'm going to confess some of my own eco sins:

I fly. A lot. On big, gas-guzzling planes. It makes filling out those carbon calculators super depressing, because my trips to see family, friends, and the markets of Morocco make all of our walking to work and turning our appliances off at night seem a little less significant.

Well the shopping online and wasting packaging thing is obvious. But you know what else I do? I buy frozen food. It might be from Trader Joe's or Whole Foods... but it's still frozen, shipped in, and surrounded in packaging. Honestly, if M weren't cooking for me, I might eat only frozen thai dumplings.

When M's out of town, I leave a light on in the living room, like a big night light. I don't think even he knows that -- I always pretend that I pull out all the plugs before going to bed just like he does.

I could go on, but really the point is this -- for every green resolution you undertake, you'll notice another area that needs some improvement. And you know what? That's the whole point of this green movement -- always keeping the future and the earth on our minds. Every step in the right direction is the right step to take.

Confession: I can't wear yellow. Nothing against the color, but I'm half Chinese and, well... it just doesn't work. But I really don't want to be neglecting all you lucky folks out there who look fab in sunny shades (especially since they're ideal this season.) Organic Style: These folks have been on my radar for a while, with a great selection of ridiculously inexpensive basics. They're selection has just exploded recently, with tons on sale, and I couldn't resist posting. Highlights include a sweet ruffled organic nightie $73, a fantastically retro organic "Follow the Bees" tee $49, and the simplest organic black wrap dress $50.

Olio United: Wow, is this shop making it hard for me to stick to a budget! With a selection of all my favorite eco designers plus a ton of indie labels, it's hard to get enough. Eco Packing: An adventerous vacation

Ready for a different spring break adventure this week? Costa Rica, anyone? Belize? Have I got the perfect eco friendly packing list for you!

The first order of business, of course, is being comfy without looking sloppy for your long plane ride. The loose organic dress will keep you relaxed but styling, while these fabulous and flowing organic jersey pants look like slacks but will feel like sweats. The great bamboo sweater/shawl is the perfect flexible extra layer for air-conditioned layovers (I have a sweater this shape, and it is FABulous.)

What's great about this plane outfit is how well it mixes in with the other fun eco pieces on this packing list. Even if you're not in any sort of vacation-offering school program, just about everyone I know starts to get a bit antsy around March. Whether it's for a weekend or a glorious week, March is the time to break out the sunscreen and sandals. In honor of our upcoming sun-seeking travels, I've put together two different eco-friendly packing lists for two very different types of vacations.

For those of us who's ideal get-away involves sipping umbrella-ed drinks while lounging in our biggest sunglasses, the ideal packing list is mix of deep blues, sophisticated grays, and sandy accessories -- all organic, sustainable, and fair trade, of course!

The simple strapless dress will look perfectly relaxed from boardwarks to boutiques, while the polka-dotted number will jazz up salsa dancing with your spring break crush. The sophisticated denim pencil skirt dresses up sleek and sexy tees, while natural and neutral bag and shoes will look perfect paired with anything you bring (or buy!) Finally, an eco friendly umbrella at a price point that won't have me terrified to bring it outdoors!

Totes should probably win an award for the many ways they've gone eco in this one product. Not content with a 100% recycled canopy (who knew the umbrella part of the umbrella had a name?), they've also used bamboo for the main handle with 70% recycled plastic hardware, a 70% recycled metal frame, and environmentally friendly packaging. Whew! I guess with that much going on, you'll want to brag with the recycled raindrop logo on the side -- luckily, it's stylish enough that it doesn't cross into greener-than-thou territory.

And thank goodness there are pretty color choices that aren't black! My favorite is the subtle "Leaf Green" color, but the bright blue "Hydrangea" will add some pizzaz overhead no matter what the skies are doing.

Can I just say that I love, love, love the Sartorialist? Honestly, there are days that I find his amazingly curated photos of real people even more inspiring that any fashion collection. That's especially true of his photos taken at the Bryant Park tents, where everyone is showing off their best ensembles (and does it pay off!)

A little more love for the red? I can only dream of having somewhere to wear this beautiful dress next week (hint, hint, M!) That slinky red silk is fair trade from Bali, and the sequins are actually recycled leather! Plus running into this dress at Envi was a nice introduction to fair trade company Alchem1st, a wonderful brand I hope will be picked up by some more US shops soon. Eco Review: Del Forte Dahlia Bootcut Jeans

Good for the world = 8/10
Del Forte is really an eco pioneer. These jeans are made of organic cotton grown in California and Texas, then sewn and finished in fairtrade conditions in LA. Points added because everything is done in the US, which means that shipping these jeans around takes a little less energy. Minor points off for using cotton, which (much as I love it) consumes an incredible amount of water as it grows.

Plays well with others = 10/10
Jeans have become ubiquitous for precisely their ability to mix into any outfit, and this pair is no exception. Plus, I succeeded in having them tailored to the exact perfect length for heels (when worn long) or flats (when rolled up.) The dark wash looks good with just about everything I own, and these Del Fortes have become my go-to for days when I'm feeling slightly "blah" about my other clothing choices.

Ten year survival = 4/10
Fashion-wise, I don't think bootcuts are leaving us anytime soon. They're flattering on pretty much every body type, and so far have survived the skinny and the wide-leg trends and are starting to pop up in the mainstream again. Now, will these exact Del Fortes last that long? I'm not so confident about that. The denim is well made with just enough stretch to keep these jeans going day to day (and I'll admit to being impressed by how little they deform with repeat wear.) But the second time I tossed them in the wash (followed by an air dry) they faded slightly but noticeably, and it took weeks of wear to get their texture soft again. Plus, I might be paranoid, but I've been noticing a very slight thinning in the ever-delicate inner thigh area (ladies, you know what I'm talking about!) Fingers crossed that I don't end up with any holes, because these are absolutely my favorite jeans!

Omg, these little bags are so cute! I hate having a full sized purse sliding off my shoulder when I'm out drinking or (even worse!) dancing. Little wristlets are the perfect answer, and I love how these are designed as pretty additions to your outfit. Plus, they're made of recycled fabric from thrift shops. Does it get any cooler? If you're not a metallic leather girl (although for night time, I think everyone should be) there are a ton of options in both matte leather and repurposed fabric.

I'll admit it -- if I don't have a chance to see them in person, the couture shows only barely make my radar. In my mind, they're way more art than fashion. But it's true, they do set the tone of things to come, and I noticed two very conistant trends this season: luxurious colors and subdued volume. I'm glad designers are sticking with the volume-on-the-lower-half trend, and relieved that it seems to be done now with super flattering a-line styles (we all know my hatred for last spring's maternity wear.)

Here is an adorable circle skirt that perfectly reflects this new take on volume (as seen in the Valentino show on Style.com.) This adorable skirt can be paired with anything in your wardrobe (though to keep the Valentino vibe, I'd suggest a loose top in a contrasting color), is made in the US with re-purposed yarns, and (for those of you who love multi-purpose clothing) can even double as a funky cape!

Pre-Spring eco fashion window shopping

With all the nerves and worry about the economy these days, it's gotten a little harder to daydream about extravagant shopping. Plus, M and I were caught up in the recent surge in credit card fraud (though our bank is handling things very well) so we're a little wary about whipping out the plastic these days. But do you know what I do when I'm feeling broke but need a little fashion fix? I go window shopping! So I'm going to break my unspoken rule about only showing purchasable items, and show you the best spots to preview some of the fun green fashions lined up for Spring.

First up is Modify's Spring Pre-Sale, all of which can be browsed and pre-ordered now for shipment around March. I'm loving this delicate shirt dress from sweatshop-free company Myth & Ritual. It captures the sweetness of spring without falling into pastels or florals.

Next stop? Stewart + Brown's spring line (organic, as always!) Though some pieces are beginning to show up S+B's web store, the best place to take a gander at all the spring offerings is via Nina's Photography's Portland Fashion Week photos. Not only can we preview everything on the catwalk, but there are great suggestions about how to build outfits out of items. Personally, I love how the ruffles on this blue dress echo the ruffles on the paired crochet jacket. If you can't wait, the Stewart + Brown Flare Knit Cardi can be had for $197.

Last but certainly not least are the spring fashions from Beau Soleil. When playing one of those "bring only one dress to a dessert island" games, I'd definitely pick one of these bamboo dresses. This Beau Medallion dress would make me feel like such a goddess! It will be available for $275 the day after Valentine's Day. Something to look forward to!

You'll notice that I tend to favor little eco boutiques here. Partially that's because the service is so personal, and partially it's because I have a soft spot for the little guys. But sometimes it can be reassuring to shop at bigger, more familiar stores, especially if you're new to green shopping or even online shopping. If it's your first foray into eco fashion, you can feel confident about customer service, shipping and returns when it comes to a familiar name (although I have to point out again that I've had absolutely amazing service from the small eco boutiques I've ordered from.) So here are three of my favorite larger retail spots with good eco friendly selections -- check them out, and if you like going green, try some of the smaller shops to the right next time!

Barneys - You'll have to wade through a ton of (lovely) organic beauty and skincare, but Barneys' organic section is worth it for the fashion. The highlight, of course, is the exclusive Loomstate for Barneys Green, but you'll also find a few choice pieces like a white organic dress by Philip Lim and a classy pair of organic Earnest Sewns.

Nordstrom - No, they're not exactly fashion forward. But with brick and mortar stores in many neighborhoods and historically fantastic customer service, I'd call Nordstrom an ideal choice for the nervous first time eco shopper. Their offerings range from the amazingly luxurious Viridis Luxe brand to the inexpensive series of adorably printed Tilden organic cotton boyshorts.

Shopbop - So what if their models tend towards the brain-washed alien look. Shopbop is fantastic about taking the kind of photos that leave no surprises when their clothing ends up on your doorstep. Then there's the free shipping thing -- fabulous. They carry hard to find organic tees and dresses from C&C California, trendy organic denim from Sling & Stone, and a series of cute printed tees from ZOOEY.

Express your love for the lowly thigh high

Ah, vacation... I think I got a little caught up in being off, wouldn't you say? Well, it's time for some new posts for the new year!

Let's talk about thigh high socks for a sec. Sure, they had a recent fashion moment, and if you're under 30, live in NYC and work in a creative field, you might already be wearing them slouchily with loose short skirts. But if you don't fall into that narrow little demographic, I'll let you in on the secret of their real purpose -- keeping you warm without adding bulk.

Under skirts and dresses, they can look just like tights without that saggy crotch thing or that too-high-waistband-making-bulges thing. Under pants, you can cuff them just above the knee and stay warm without feeling like you're adding inches to your thighs. Plus when the weather warms up a bit (or if you live in Boston and are dealing with this global warming heat wave) you can try them slouched and all Erin-Fetherston-y and pretend you really do live in NYC with a fab creative job.

First up, these sleek recycled tree fiber thigh highs from French company G=9.8, which have gotten a lot of attention this season. Sprig praised them first, and Hippyshopper just reminded me of them. These are perfect for work days or under very very tight jeans (although in good conscious, I suppose I should recommend against the later).

Next up are these "regenerated" socks by unknown Love & Socks. I can't find anything about the company, but supposedly these are both eco friendly and ridiculously cheap? Hey, stranger things have happened. Rock these with boots and a knee length skirt for just a strip of fun color.

Finally, a super long pair from fair trade standby American Apparel. Unless you're Amazonian, you'll have to cuff these or slouch them, but that added detail makes them the perfect accent to layer under your girly summer dresses.

p.s. Notice that the American Apparel pair is NOT made of cotton. I went to a really eye opening exhibit at the Museum of Natural History on water usage. I was shocked by how much more water Americans use (we consume 151 gallons per person per day, compared to the UK's 31!) as well as how much water it takes to grow cotton. My resolution this year is to try to pay more attention the water consumption in a product the way we've all learned to be good about carbon consumption. Amusingly enough, polyester is formed by a dehydration reaction that creates water. Figured that would be a good stand by while I try to educate myself on water consumption issues a bit more.

Channel your inner eco snow bunny

9 months out of the year, I'm willing to put up with a little discomfort in the foot region in the name of style. 4" stilettos, wobbly platforms, you name it, I've danced all night in it. But come winter and snow on the ground, I start taking my footwear very, very seriously.

These boots by Patagonia are super cute and contain up to 20% recycled content. But mostly I chose to feature them because I trust that Patagonia made them warm enough and sturdy enough to keep my toes toasty while I'm trekking through icy Boston. There are probably cuter or greener boots out there, but if you get frostbite wearing them, what's the point?

I've found that flat winter boots look fantastic when paired with last season's organic skinny jeans, making them this winter's must have denim. A fair trade tunic sweater keeps drafts from sneaking in, while an organic wool coat plays with proportion and makes bulk (inevitable this time of year) look chic by emphasizing it with big buttons and a big collar. Top everything off with a rakish organic cap in a bright and cheery color, and you're ready to brave whatever winter might throw at you!

p.s. Now, we learned a little last week about the difference between natural and USDA approved organic. It doesn't look like Frog's Leap has that later seal of approval, so read a little about their farming practices if you're worried and decide if their version of organic rates high enough on your green meter. It's not often that I see a celeb in a photo wearing a cute outfit and get to post it directly without an eco conversion. But this long, relaxed organic dress has been seen on everyone from dolphin-lover Hayden Panettiere to mom-to-be Christina Aguilera (looking smashing above.) Though Gypsy 05 isn't a traditionally "green" company, they chose to make this dress with organic fabric and natural dyes in a solar-powered factory. I wonder if it's coincidence that their one green foray is the dress that's be come a hit? Hopefully this success will inspire the designers (and others!) to keep choosing green.

This dress looks perfect for LA or anywhere else relaxed and not too chilly (actually, I was daydreaming what a warm and sexy nightgown it might make for here in Boston!) Right now we east coasters might be looking at the first flakes of snow, but that doesn't mean the rest of the country isn't basking in some global warming!

She was struck by Ashley Watson's designs first, but then was won over by the eco side. Says Shoppingsmycardio, "I have to be honest – I’m not the most “green” girl out there. Capture that Portman je ne sais quoi

I have a soft spot for the well educated and well informed Ms. Natalie Portman (I'm sure it doesn't hurt that she went to the same high school as my good friend A, who remembers her as being totally down to earth.) Natalie always manages to show up to events looking young, fresh, and not at all overdone. This particular Getty Images photo (via Fashion Week Daily) is a classic example of her totally enviable style sense -- here she is at the premiere of Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium in a flashy red-carpet-worthy color, but a completely laid back (and forgiving!) shape. Plus, yum, look how she's showing off those legs!

This dress from Toggery is 70% sustainable bamboo and 30% organic cotton, with all the relaxed style and dramatic color of Natalie's version (which is from the Olsen twins' Elizabeth & James line.) I've actually been eyeing it all week as a contender for "awesome-but-not-trying-too-hard" outfit to wear to a reunion of M's (guess which one!) Now that I've seen how effortlessly chic Natalie looks in the same style, I might be sold. All I need to finish off the look are some flashy vintage gold heels. Perfection!

Tis the season for organic fleece jackets! They're popping up everywhere, in styles for layering, snuggling and showing off, so you're sure to find the perfect version to keep out the chill.

Throw this one on when you're running weekend errands, and know you'll look perfect no matter who you run into.

Patagonia teaches us what it takes to build clothing

I could go on and on about how impressed I am by this project by green-leaning gear maker Patagonia, but I promised myself when I started this blog that there would be minimal pontification.

The Footprint Chronicles is startlingly honest look at exactly what goes into a selection of Patagonia products, from design to manufacture to distribution. Of course it's promotional material in some respect, but it's also a wonderful peak into the many steps and choices that go into manufacturing clothing. For people who've never thought about where and how their clothing is made, it's a gentle wake up call. For greenies looking for a new perspective, it's a nice reminder about the compromises that are inevitably required (stomach parasites? who knew!) Check it out, and then make sure to tell Patagonia you appreciate this step towards transparency.

I love recycled tire belts for two reasons (besides the obvious "what a brilliant idea for old tires!" thing.) First: They have a totally unique look without being too wild and out there. I've worn mine (in thick basic black from Hempest) to work and didn't get any second looks. Second: They really are durable! My old leather or leather-like belts all developed cracks or kitty bite marks after a year (they were all either H&M or vintage, so maybe things weren't in their favor.) But these tires were built to withstand way more abuse than they're getting around my waist (although I suppose I can't really speak for the abuse anyone else puts their belts through.)

These belts from Zero Per Gallon have the added benefit of fun colors and an absolutely hilarious write-up (which advertises the belts' "SooperDooper-Quik-'N-EZ NoHands Keep-U-Riding Fastening System (SDQNEZNHKURFS)" amongst other benefits.) Seriously, even if all your belt wishes have been met, you should check these belts out for the write-up alone. Sizes are for boys and voluptuous girls, but I'll bet skinny little things could ask designer Jonny5 to throw together a custom size.

I'm always somewhat bemused by newly made clothing that tries to mimic the look and feel of vintage scarves. Sure, the patterns and colors are pretty, but isn't half the point of wearing a vintage scarf to be unique and a little funky? A quirky little print that made you stand out in the dressing room is going to look a little silly if everyone on the street is wearing the same thing (see "fear of patterns" below.)

This Nieves Lavi top is one of the subtler offenders, but I'd still rather chose a one-of-a-kind, hand-made, recycled vintage scarf top from Grey Goat any day! I think the rich colors of this particular top would be sublime for the holidays, but if this version isn't tickling your fancy, check out the myriad of other beautiful choices.

Doie nails the subdued tunic LBD

I've always been impressed with the construction and creativity of Doie Designs (here in Boston, they're carried by Envi.) But for some reason, I never found a design that got my heart racing and my blood pumping. It probably has something to do with my irrational fear of patterns -- I always think, will this match what I own? will I get bored of it? will I show up at a party and blend in the wallpaper? Silly fears, I know, but they always make me pause when it comes to committing to patterned clothing.

All that changed last week when founder Sara Kirsner sent me an email to remind me to check out her eco brand. Looking at the new Fall Line, I saw a ton of new pieces with her signature style -- Asian-inspired prints accenting hems, necklines and even elbows. Again, I thought, "Beautiful, but those patterns..." And then I saw this bamboo tunic dress.

First of all, the cut is just perfect right now -- flowy enough to evoke last season's girly dressy trend, sleek enough to stay away from last season's infantalizing trend, short enough to be uber sexy, loose enough to stay totally sophisticated. Then there's that pattern -- it doesn't scare away even the most avowed pattern fearer (me!) but is just that one extra touch to make this one LBD that won't be forgotten. Plus, notice how the arm sashes' position calls attention to your waist? That's right, an optical illusion that keeps things hour glassed without needing Spanx.

You could pull this one off with tights and flat boots at your office. But I say save it for heels and something (or someone!) really special.

It's been ages since I've done something for the men out there -- they've got to look gorgeous and green too, right? This organic top would be a perfect gift for the guy in your life who needs a little help in the fashion department (luckily, I don't need to break it out for the man in mine!) Make the rain look good on you

I have a bit of a complicated social agenda for tonight, starting with standing in the rain for an hour or two, and then moving on to a relaxed but not dive-y bar. So what in the world can I wear that will keep me dry and cozy but not leave me looking like a bum off the street once I'm out for a drink?

The first key is rain boots -- I don't play around with the comfort of my toes. I'm always annoyed when I can't find recycled content rain boots. Surely someone must be making them! But until I find that brilliant eco maker, I'll keep my eye on these tough looking Gap wellies, with proceeds donated to the Global Fund. Next, how about a perfect pair of organic wide leg pants. This Serfontaine pair will look cute and trouser-y with the hems rolled, and I'll stay dry and mud-free. Then a sweater that will keep me warm and a something sexy underneath to show off a little skin once I'm in the bar.
